Make Your Own Dragonfly Embellishments and Accents

Good morning! Julie here, welcoming Ashley back for another guest post. Today, Ashley is going to show us how to make dragonfly embellishments using the Beautiful Dragonflies Stamp Set and the Dragonfly Crafting Dies. Using Ashley's techniques, you can make your own dragonfly accents for cards, layouts, or any papercraft project!

Tt-separator

Hi everyone! It’s Ashley, and I’m back today to share a new layout in my Traveler’s Notebook with you! I used the Beautiful Dragonflies Stamp set and the Dragonfly Die. I love stamping on patterned paper and having the color show through my stamping. I stamped the dragonflies several times on different patterned papers to create a fun look for my Traveler’s Notebook layout!

Photo-1

Once I had some of the dragonflies stamped, I also ran the Dragonfly Die through my manual die cut machine, to give a different look to the dragonflies. I wanted to create a scattered look on my layout, to make it look like they were flying across the page. Before adding them to the layout, I layered some of the die cut dragonflies over the stamped dragonflies to create a dimensional look. Then I machine stitched down the center of each one to add texture.

Photo-2

Next, I placed my photo in the center of the layout. I wanted to have the dragonflies “flying” around the photo. I love the whimsical look it adds to the layout. Once all of my dragonflies were in place, I used a few embellishments to tie the look of the layout together.

Photo-3

The Beautiful Dragonflies stamp set also includes some great sentiments and photo captions. I knew the “Chase Your Dreams” sentiment would be perfect for the title of my layout. I stamped it with Black Archival Ink on a circle sticker and layered it under my photo. It was a great finishing touch to my Traveler’s Notebook layout!

Photo-4

I hope you’ve been inspired to combine your stamps and dies in fun ways on your Traveler's Notebook layouts and memory keepering projects! Layering is always a great way to add interest. I hope you’ll give it a try!

Julie here again. I hope you enjoyed seeing how Ashley made dragonfly accents for her project and that you'll try making some dragonfly embellishments for your next card, layout, or craft project. I have been absolutely loving getting to see Ashley's Travel's Notebook pages and scrapbook layouts over the last couple of months. Ashley's projects have been inspiring me to get back to journaling and doing little bits of art every day.

Tips and Project Ideas for the Build a Birdhouse Crafting Dies

Hi everyone. This is Bev. I have been having a lot of fun playing with the Build a Birdhouse crafting dies and I have so many tips I want to share with you for using them. You can watch the video, or keep reading to make sure you see all the project ideas and see all the tips too!

Tip 1: Don't Cut Apart Your Dies!

Now my first tip may seem a little odd. I recommend that you leave these dies connected. In other words, don’t nip apart the connectors between each of these dies. Here is why. First, some of these dies are small and easy to lose. Second, these birdhouse pieces are designed to be mixed and matched in a bunch of different colors. Since none of these dies are nested just leave the dies connected and make lots of die cut roofs, perches, and birdhouses. And don't forget that in addition to cardstock and patterned paper, these dies will cut out felt, thin chipboard, cork, thin wood paper, fabric, and more. Those unusual materials make great birdhouse parts!

Build-a-Birdhouse-Keep-dies-together

Tip 2: Keep All the Extra Die-Cut Birdhouse Pieces!

My next tip is don’t throw away the extra birdhouse pieces. Instead keep them together for future projects. Here at the Technique Tuesday offices, we keep the dies in a plain envelope and we keep all those pieces in that same envelope with the dies. Having all these extra birdhouse pieces in one place makes it easy to create a quick card, gift tag or scrapbook layout later.

Build-a-Birdhouse-Envelope-of-parts

Tip 3: Use a Glue Pen or Fine Tip Adhesive Applicator!

Once you’ve picked out the pieces you are going to use for a specific project, you need to adhere them together. If you are working with paper, I recommend using a glue pen to adhere small, die-cut pieces together. I prefer this Quickie Glue Pen. A high-quality glue pen lets you add a small amount of glue right where you need it and dries clear too.

If you are working with more porous materials, like felt or chipboard, you’ll need a stronger adhesive and more of it. For these porous materials, I prefer this On Point Glue. Now the first thing I like about the On Point Glue is that it has a very fine tip that lets me get the glue where I want it to be. It also has a little pieces of metal, really a pin, inside the lid that slides down into the tip to keep it from clogging. And the adhesive is pretty strong so it will keep these heavier materials together better.

Tip 4: Make the Entrances Look Dark and Shadowy!

Once you have those pieces adhered, you need to decide what to do about the hole in the front of the birdhouse. Now, one option is to leave the hole open. But I wanted it to look dark and shadowed, so here’s how I do that. I cut out a piece of black or dark shadow colored cardstock. Then I adhere it to the back of the birdhouse. Not only does this provide the shadow color, the dark piece is actually behind the birdhouse so it adds just a bit of dimensional interest too.

Tip 5: Cut Down Your Birdhouses!

Another tip is that these die-cut birdhouses are designed to be cut down. We made them this way so that you could adjust the size to fit better on your specific project. Plus being able to make different sized birdhouses lets you make more visually interesting projects. To make different-sized birdhouses, just trim off the bottom of the one-hole or three-hole birdhouse die cuts. Then add roofs or perches!

Tip 6: Cut Out Some White Pieces and Add Patterns!

My final tip is to also consider die-cutting out some birdhouse pieces from white cardstock or watercolor paper. You can use a fine tip pen to add a wood grain pattern or some other pattern to your birdhouses. Or use your favorite coloring medium to add shadows and highlights. For example, Tam used Copic markers to make it look like there are red shingles or corrugated steel on the roof of this die-cut birdhouse accent.

I hope you enjoyed these tips and projects featuring the Build a Birdhouse dies. And I hope you are inspired to go make some cards, gift tags, or accents for your scrapbook pages using some of your own die-cut birdhouses.

Project ideas for Valentine's Day...

Hey friends, it’s Shelley! Have you started thinking about your Valentine's Day projects? While I was out packing some orders in the warehouse today, I noticed lots of loved-themed stamps and dies that have me inspired. Here are some project ideas to get your creativity flowing! (Clink on the project pictures to learn more about the featured products. Or see them all in the Love Collection!)

Vday-NL-pics7

Shake things up! Although it’s hard to see in this photo, the die cut Love Puzzle pieces on this card are raised to make a shaker box filled with sequins. Interactive cards are such fun to receive!

Vday-NL-pics7

Create a sweet paper airplane border inside and out: Cut a border along the outside edge of your card using the Paper Airplane border dies. The pink airplane and heart-trail are glued to the inside so when the flap is lifted the plane is sailing across the inside of the card as well. (Tutorial Coming Soon! Sign up for our newsletter to see it first!)

Vday-NL-pics7

Just Charming: There are 6 different dies in the Charming Hearts craft die set and it’s only $9.99! These delicate dies are great on cards or tied to packages. Cut them from shiny metallic gold or silver paper and they almost look like jewelry!

Vday-NL-pics7

Sassy Sentiments: Valentine messages don’t have to be sentimental. If you’re looking for a sentiment will a little attitude, add some humor to your cards with the Love Stinks or You’re Not Normal stamp sets.

Vday-NL-pics7

Piece it together: This unique card combines die cut puzzle pieces from the Pieces of My Heart craft die and a stamped image. Stamp and color the Cherry Blossom stamp set on white cardstock. Then position the puzzle die over the cherry blossom image and run it through your die cutting machine. It’s also fun to stamp a message and put the loose puzzle pieces in an envelope for the recipient to put together!

Vday-NL-pics7

Punny Valentines: Remember the Valentines you received in school with adorable animals and punny sayings? You can re-create the nostalgia using your favorite critters from stamps in the Animal House collection, like Frederick and Fiona Fox.

Vday-NL-pics7

Send Some Love: Consider sending Valentines to someone other than your sweetie. Brighten the day of an elderly friend or reach out to someone you haven’t seen in a long time with an unexpected card. This cheerful greeting features the Sending Love craft die and Love is in the Air stamp set.

Vday-NL-pics7

Lots of Love: This card goes together in a heartbeat! Just die cut the word “Love” from the Long Love craft die set in a rainbow of colors, add a couple hearts and there will be no question how you feel!

Vday-NL-pics7

One die, lots of impact: The Cascading Heart border die is sized perfectly to create a border down the edge of an A2 card in one quick cut. You can keep your project time to a minimum by cutting the border and letting the hearts fall out, then place a piece of red paper inside to shine through the open hearts. Or fill in the hearts by cutting the die on various colors of cardstock and piecing it back together.

Vday-NL-pics7

Love takes flight: The new Love is in the Air stamp set makes my heart happy! The simple images lend themselves to all kinds of coloring mediums, but won’t take a lot of time to finish. I also like the versatility of the set as I can use it for cards but also my scrapbook layouts.

After looking at all these projects from our creative team, I can’t wait to get started on some cards of my own…I just have to decide which I LOVE the most! Which card inspires you?
